Many of us are welcoming the warmer weather sporting flip-flop sandals, however, their popularity among teens and young adults is responsible for a growing epidemic of heel pain in this population, according to Timothy Ford, DPM, FACFAS a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Total ankle replacement surgery

Doctors Ford and Towarnicki have gone thru training to perform the STAR Total Ankle Replacement Surgery (Sanandinavian Total Ankle Replacement System). This implant is designed to allow the patient to regain some of his/her normal ankle mobilty and function. It is intended for those who have a painful arthritic ankle joint due to osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

New technique in treating pediatric flatfoot deformity

 Dr Ford and the Podiatric Residency/Fellowship Program at KentuckyOne Health (Jewish and University of Louisville Hospital's) will be presenting a new technique in the surgical treatment of symptomatic pediatric/adolescent flatfoot deformity. Augmentation of the calcaneal-navicular ligament or "spring ligament" is being performed as an adjuctive procedure to improve the overall outcome in pediatric/adolscent flatfoot deformity. A series of cases will be reported at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons Annual Scientific Seminar in Phoenix AZ in February 2015.
